Child Play Therapy
Your child’s world
Children are funny little creatures. They cry and they laugh, they fight and they play, they whisper and they yell. We all were children once, but sometimes we forget what it was like. The world is bigger when you’re a kid, and sometimes you don’t realize what’s going on. As a caregiver, you may feel that your child is struggling to communicate their feelings with you, family members, or other children, and it’s starting to worry you. This is a challenge many caregivers and children face.
Your child may…
Act out in the classroom or at home
Become anxious about certain situations
Withdraw from you, family, teachers, peers
Receive behavioral reports from school or coaches
There’s a reason behind your child’s behavior and your own feelings of anxiety about the current state of things, but a proven method for development and progress exists: play-based therapies.
Play creates room for development
Famous educator and philosopher, Maria Montessori, is quoted as saying, “play is the work of the child.” Research in brain science and child development support the assertion that children learn, process, and develop best through playful engagement. In play-based therapy, therapists are never just playing with the child but are intentionally using methods to help children learn, process emotions, and develop their capacity to communicate. Whether your kiddo needs assistance processing through traumatic experiences, regulating their big feelings, managing transitions, or strengthening the attachment relationship, play-based therapies are the best way to address those needs in therapy.
At NCTP, our therapists are trained in a variety of play therapies, including TheraPlay, child-centered play, and the expressive arts.
