Heavy Emotions During the Holiday Season

by Maggie Ratley

The holiday season can be a difficult time for many people. While people tend to associate the holiday season as a happy and joyful time, for many people, these are not the only feelings that are coming up. During the holiday season, feelings of loneliness, sadness, grief, and other heavy emotions may begin or intensify. Holidays can be a reminder of those who can’t be with us. It could be a time that reminds a person of the difficulties they face when they are with their family. It may be a time when routines and schedules get changed, and changes can be difficult.

During other times of the year, these emotions and situations may already be hard to sit with, but during the holiday season, it may be even more difficult because of the expectation from others to be joyful. This mixture of heavy feelings and the pressure to feel happy can be overwhelming, draining, and isolating.

If you are struggling with heavy feelings this holiday season, know that it is okay to feel whatever it is you are feeling. It is okay if you are struggling to find happiness and excitement this season. It is okay if you feel both cheerful and heavy emotions. Know that you are not alone in these feelings. Know that it is okay to ask for support during this time. You are deserving of whatever it is you need, whether that be time spent alone, setting boundaries, or something else that helps you move through your feelings. All of your feelings and needs are valid this holiday season.
