Brainspotting Therapy

Brainspotting in Nashville

What is brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a treatment method, and derivative of EMDR, that works by identifying, processing, and releasing neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation, and a variety of other challenging symptoms. In simpler terms, Brainspotting is a way for a therapist to help you overcome something negative that affects your mental health. Whether it’s a traumatic past experience, painful negative emotions, or even physical pain or sensations caused by something psychological, Brainspotting can help you overcome it.

How does Brainspotting work?

Brainspotting activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself from trauma. The creator of brainspotting, David Grand, believes traumatic memories and emotions are stored in specific locations in the brain and that we access those locations through eye movement. Think about what happens when you do mental math, attempt to remember what the capital of Arkansas is, or the birthday of a friend or colleague. Naturally, your eyes move to a specific position, or “brain spot.” According to David Grand, the same proves true for traumatic experiences and negative emotions.

By focusing the attention on a pointer, a trained brainspotting therapist guides your eye to various positions, or “brainspots.” The therapist is looking for the position where your trauma is stored. Once the therapist has found where the trauma or negative emotion is located, they have higher access to help you reprocess it. At this point, you may experience some mental or physical discomfort as you have heightened access to the stored memory. The brainspotting therapist then uses traditional therapeutic techniques to help you heal.

*Brainspotting can be conducted via telehealth during times of social distancing.
