Supporting Global Causes While Protecting Your Mental Health

In a time when global news is right at your fingertips, it can be hard to balance advocating for good causes and protecting your mental health. What can we do to support the causes we believe in without letting the world get to us? Here are 5 steps to ensure you practice mindful advocacy while balancing mental health.

  1. Share Information Responsibly: Some platforms release false information to gain traction on their site. Ensure that the information you share comes from a reliable source.

  2. Selective Engagement: Give the most attention to issues that truly matter to you. Posting small amounts of information is usually more impactful than sharing large amounts of overwhelming information.

  3. Set Boundaries: Monitor and limit media consumption to prevent burnout, compassion fatigue, and doom scrolling. Take breaks when needed and try not to begin or end your day scrolling through news feeds.

  4. Balance is Key: While news of tragedies and gossip is often spread, good news is also shared. Try to have a balanced media diet where your algorithm shows more than just the idea that “the world is doomed and it’s all bad”.

  5. Take Action: Contact government officials, donate, protest, and connect with other like-minded individuals who share the same passion for change as you do.

Advocating for global causes does not have to mean sacrificing your mental health. Finding a balance between practicing mindfulness and showing up for others is important. Remember to check in with yourself regularly when consuming information on social media, take breaks when needed, and find a community within your area to share your sentiments with. In a world where it seems the bad outweighs the good, let’s all strive to create a place for humanity and well-being that encourages us to make a positive impact without neglecting our mental health.
